The Fundamentals of an Electric Power Cord

A power cord is a device that helps transmit power from a power source to an electric appliance. Such a cord can be either connected directly to a wall socket or via an extension cord. Such cords are of special importance in a myriad of industrial sectors ranging from commercial to industrial to consumer products.

Components of a cord

A cord that is used for transmitting electric power from the socket to the electrical device features a receiver at one end and a connector at the other. These components are molded on either end of the cord. These cords are flexible. The wires in such cords are encapsulated in high-quality flexible plastic.

The expertise and technical capabilities of certain manufacturers allows them to draw 8mm copper rods into wires that are 0.05mm in width. In this process, everything from the extrusion to the molding of couplers needs to be carried out in keeping with the highest quality standards. It is not uncommon to see several manufacturers carrying our end-to-end operations in-house so as to maintain a strict control over quality parameters.

Besides the detachable power cord, certain products also feature a fixed cord. A fixed cord eliminates the dangers associated with the live protruding pins causing an electric shock. An AC adapter, for instance, may have a fixed cord. This mitigating the chances of an electrical shock to an AC adapter user.

Power cords and their usage in various industry sectors

The configurations of such cords differ from country to country. For instance, the North American cords need to conform to NEMA standards. And, there is a separate range of cords meant specifically for use with medical and dental equipment. The cords used in such applications are compliant with the guidelines laid down by the UL 544 standard. Thus, any type of cord that is used for medical applications needs to pass the standard testing requirements under UL and CSA. They need to be stringently tested according to the UL 817 parameters.

While these are just a few examples, the required cord specifications vary from one industry to another.

Finding a manufacturer for custom services

Industries often seek custom cord manufacturing services for first-to-market or unique products. For such requirements, it is important to find a manufacturer that you can trust with your intellectual property. Another important aspect to bear in mind while selecting a manufacturer is its ability to deliver per country-specific requirements.

Countries across the world have individual standards relating to an electrical power cord. Thus, these standards differ between countries such as continental United States, China, India / South Africa, Italy, Japan, Israel, Australia, Argentina, and so on. Universal jumper cords, on the other hand, are recognized in the international market as they have certain universally approved codes.
